I thought the best way to trigger this blog is to discuss the rationales for stored procedures, the obstacles to their adoption, languages used for writing stored procedures, and the $100000 question of proprietary procedural languages such as PL/SQL versus open standards languages such as Java.

You use what is needed at the time. There is never a single all encompassing language.
If there was, there would be no other languages available.
I have not read the sample chapter, I will do that
For the past nine years I have exclusively used PL/SQL in all my stored procedures. However, we have recently hired some new resources and they are more familiar with Java (based on the fact that they are primarly programmers rather than dba's).
So now I'm considering using both PL/SQL and Java.
Does anyone have thoughts on using a mixed-bag. My main argument for using both is to increase productivity by having multiple resources able to create stored procedures.

Most customers use both PL/SQL and Java. I gave arule of thumb on when to use PL/SQL, when to use Java in the database and when to use Java/J2EE outside the database -- in the first free chapter of my book @ http://books.elsevier.com/bookscat/samples/1555583296/Sample_Chapters/02~chapter_one.pdf

PL/SQL and Jave both language are using in market from last nine years. But Now many other language are in market so now there are good competition.
